One of the best kept secrets in the Inner Richmond with the most reasonably priced omakase menus! I've had dinner here several times & it's always on point. Super fresh, delicately prepared dishes and nigiri. Sake recommends are helpful too. Menu changes on what is available. Sit at the sushi bar if you can (reservations go quickly) so you can watch the sushi chefs in their craft & artistry. This is a cosy (small) restaurant so reservations are strongly recommended.
This is the perfect place to have an intimate celebration. My boyfriend surprised me with omakase here for our anniversary and it was so good! First of all, the service here is immaculate - you can tell they try to give you the most seamless experience by taking care of you but not wanting to bother your table too much. Additionally, they do such a good job of explaining each dish and how we should eat it. On top of the service, the quality of each plate and its ingredients is what's most memorable. It was to the point that it was so hard to choose which plate was our favorite. The course's balance of fish and "appetizer" esque plates were proportionate and the pace of each dish was nicely timed as well. I would say Wako's omakase experience lives up to its price and I would definitely recommend it to others.
date visited: 08.2022 ordered: omakase this was my favorite omakase i've done in the city! i really love the attention to detail with each dish and how each piece was so fresh and flavorful. the non-sushi dishes were also super unique, my favorite being the crab and the chawanmushi! the hojicha panna cotta was also super yummy and fresh as dessert :) our chef was so attentive and kind, and the restaurant itself is so intimate and cozy, i loved the sleek and simple look
Took my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner, and we had such a good experience! Not the best omakase I've had by any means, but nothing to complain about, and the quality of the sushi was memorable. Service was stellar throughout, and the servers were incredibly kind and attentive. I loved sitting at the counter, and the sushi chefs were super nice and fun to converse with. My favorites were Blue Fin Tuna Belly, Salmon, Uni, and Barracuda. The appetizers were fairly unique, but the portions were definitely one-biters. I liked the Strawberry Granita dessert a lot, but was sad that the Matcha Panna Cotta was out that evening. They give you a decent amount of sushi, but I was honestly expecting to be fuller by the end of the meal. They only gave one extra course -- some fried shrimp, which we definitely appreciated, but overall, the experience wasn't as much food as I would have liked. We ended up snacking more at home afterwards.
Wako is a small sushi restaurant on Clement St in the Richmond district, a street with many dining options. The restaurant is cozy and has a neighborhood feel. They offer only one menu, an omakase menu, priced at $165. The menu features a wide variety of dishes, including several hot items. Here's the menu from my visit at the end of June: 1. starter: steamed abalone with blueberry, cherry tomato, and okra 2. appetizer: mozuku seaweed with strawberry, sesame tofu with wasabi, simmered sea snail, black cod katsu with tartar sauce 3. sashimi: young king mackerel and another fish (suzuki?) 4. chawanmushi with hamo (pike eel) and ikura 5. madai (red snapper) 6. hirame (halibut) with fin's fish 7. hotate 8. toki shirazu salmon 9. ao ebi (blue shrimp) 10. deep-fried shrimp head with lemon 11. kamasu (barracuda) 12. bluefin tuna in jalapeno soy sauce (zuke chutoro) 13. bluefin tuna belly 14. anago with mountain pepper 15. chopped bluefin tuna handroll 16. tamago seafood egg cake 17. red miso soup with shimeji mushrooms and mitsuba leaf 18. extra sushi (optional): A5 wagyu +$15 19. matcha panna cotta The menu was well-rounded with some nice specialties. The steamed abalone was a pleasant surprise, though a bit chewy. The black cod in the appetizer was good, but the katsu preparation of black cod and tartar sauce felt unconventional for a Japanese restaurant. The chawanmushi with hamo (a summer delicacy) was excellent, and the addition of fin's fish on the halibut was a nice touch. The ao ebi was a great type of shrimp, with the crispy head served separately. The kamasu was excellent and is actually one of my favorite nigiri. Unfortunately, the tuna had a slightly acidic taste, possibly from the marinade. The anago was well-prepared. While the menu doesn't include wagyu or uni, they can be ordered as extras (I had the wagyu nigiri for $15). Although most fish come from Japan, some fishes are sourced elsewhere: ao ebi from New Caledonia, halibut from Korea, and bluefin tuna from Baja, Mexico. Overall rating: 4.5/5.0
My fourth time to Wako, and this time it's been at least 8 years. I didn't even realize they were on Clement, because I remember it was on Geary. The restaurant is still small, with maybe 8 counter seats and 5 tables. You can make a reservation on Tock and prepay a deposit which is then refunded when you honor your reservation. The tasting menu is $165 per person to start with optional add ons that you can choose before dessert is served. The tasting menu includes one starter, one appetizer (4 small bites), 4 pc sashimi, chawanmushi, 9 pc nigiri, one hand roll, 1pc tamago, miso soup, and dessert. Everything was very good. Standouts were the blue shrimp, akami, toro, and uni. Sake list is good and goes well with the food. Service is pretty great. Street parking only.
Before Covid, we used to live close by but never had a chance to try...we are so glad that they still there after the pandemic. The vibe was peaceful and friendly. The chef, Jin, was so friendly and informative. He answered every questions we had. Also other staffs were so nice as well. The quality of fish, rice, wasabi and sauce they used were great and amazing in every bite. It's very worth the money and experience. If you wanna try Omagase for the first time or look for something that you won't regret to pay, I totally recommend Wako. All in all, it's very impressive and here's one of the top of my list for the Omagase experience in SF!!!
If you're looking for an omakase dinner in sf, look no further! 2nd time coming here and we will always come back. I love the intimate vibes of this place and counter seating. They have a few extra tables, but for omakase I always recommend sitting at the sushi counter. $165 per person with the ability to add extras like the toro uni hand roll at the end of your meal if you're still hungry. Jin San was a pleasure and we loved getting served by him. Great conversations were had, and we learned a lot about the fish we were eating. Service is always super attentive here and they gave us a little card for our anniversary (I got one for my birthday last time).
Came here for a birthday dinner and booked a month ahead. I recommend booking as early as possible because spots do get filled up. The place is small but very clean and modern. The staff here is very friendly. My favorite nigiri was the blue fin tuna which literally melted in my mouth. The fishes were all good quality and very tender. I enjoyed everything here from the appetizers to the dessert.
I love omakases and when it's my birthday, that's what I'm having. Came here on a Friday evening with a 5:45pm reservation at the sushi counter. I had to actually prepay $70 plus tax for the reservation. I guess they wanted to make sure we would show up. After dining, your credit card is credited with what you prepaid. We both selected the omakase menu of $165 per person and it did not disappoint. We liked sitting at the bar so we could see what the chefs were slicing, scoring and torching. The variety of food was just right. You could really taste the flavors and freshness of the fish. I liked how they left the paper menu out so we would know what we were being served next. And the chef still told us what fish it was or what soup it was. The staff was very polite and helpful in selecting which sake to order. Overall we had a great experience with just the right amount of food. There was also a supplemental menu offered which included waygu and uni hand rolls but we had just enough for dinner from the omakase dinner. This is only a 8 seat counter venue with maybe 5 tables suitable for 2 persons. Only One table could fit 4 people. This is the kind of place I come only on a special occasion as the bill for two was over $450 but that did include the $6 beer and $20 glass of sake.
